Soulful House Music
BRINGING THE PAST TO THE PRESENT
Soulful house music has been proving for decades that the decision to use electronic instruments during production doesn't have to remove the human element or emotion from a musical recording. There are many who are worried that over-reliance on technology will spell the end of the dynamic creativity and beauty that characterized the glory years of soul music in the 1970's and 80's. However, listening to soulful house music, which is designed for the dance floor and which is almost entirely based on an electronic foundation reveals that these fears are misplaced.

There are different types of soulful house music, but the two most popular approach the inclusion of the human element from different directions. There are some producers and artists who prefer to engage a live vocalist to sing over their house beats in order to impart a deeper, more engaging emotional element to the music. In some ways this is reminiscent of modern R & B, where production is centered around the vocal and complemented by advanced recording technologies to achieve an excellent result.
Another philosophy in soulful house music instead seeks to sample classic performances from the history of soul music and build tracks around that premise. This means the extensive used of recorded ‘live' instrumentation as well as previously recorded vocals in order to create a new song. Sometimes these tracks merely slap a house beat onto a soul standard, but more often there is a serious attempt to produce a new work which captures the essence of the original source material but also takes it into a new direction, one which is danceable and which is usually more up-tempo. This type of soulful house music also provides a way for younger listeners to connect with a musical past that they might not have been aware of.
